Overview of the project

The Programme’s core region with clean air and good ecology has a huge potential for eco-tourism development. The cross-border areas in Finland and Russia have some common features - many forests, many small rivers and hard-to-reach areas with wetlands and bogs. Therefore, the region needs for innovative technical solutions for further competitive growth and development.

Nowadays, due to development and implementation of smart & green technologies in construction a creation of new composites on the basis of wood is of particular importance. Wood is a naturally renewable eco-friendly raw resource which is easily processed, can have extremely small weight, which makes it possible to reduce logistic expenses in the process of hard-to-reach areas improvement.  Use of special technologies can make wood more durable, stronger and safer and reduce the amount of wood-raw materials consumed. It would allow creating extralight high-strength elements of wooden structural units for housing construction, a bridge building as well as the development of hard-to-reach green and island areas.

The project aims to development and implementation of innovative nanocomposite material for organization of an easily accessible, well-maintained environment with the purpose of cost-effective development of urban and rural areas in the Programme's core region.

The innovative technology of hybrid wood composites with external reinforcement opens up new possibilities for creating ultra-light but high-strength and high-resource structures in wooden house-building. Also hybrid wood composites with external reinforcement can be used in construction of infrastructural modules in hard-to-reach zones in the Programme's core area. There can different types of constructions - arbors, minor bridges, bog footbridges, etc. It makes it possible to apply the widest range of architectural solutions in traditional or modern style without any restrictions and at the same time economize national natural resources. Guidelines and various educational materials will be developed and distributed to ensure wide dissemination of information. Educational programs will be developed for LUT and SPbPU students and students of other universities and professionals.

The target groups and beneficiaries of the project

One of the target groups of the project are students of SPbPU, LUT, and other universities, taking courses in the area of material science and construction engineering.

Another target group are professionals and staff of the other reserves/parks and recreational areas, who will the knowledge about new materials application.

The administration of cities, management of parks, reserves and other recreational areas also will be interested in project results implementation. 

Thus, the administration of Vinnitsa municipality has already expressed interest in the project. They confirmed the agreement on constructions installation in Vepsky Forest, natural park located in Vinnitsa. It is planned that after the installation of small footbridges and other constructions, elderly people, parents with infants and baby carriages, as well as disabled people will visit the park without restrictions and discomfort. The project is also supported by the administration of Lappeenranta. 

The biggest target group and the main beneficiary of the project will be the population of the Programme’s core region, who will gain access to hard-to-reach areas and improved infrastructure. 

Key project outputs

  1. Innovative construction technology to increase the availability and attractiveness of territories;

  2. Technological equipment, designed and assembled, nomenclature of basic construction elements; 

  3. Test results of constructions and materials, analysis of applicability;

  4. Installations of manufactured constructions in the territories and landscaping;

  5. Results of monitoring and analysis after the constructions installation;

  6. The analysis of the achieved results, an assessment of economic efficiency and operational reliability of the constructions;

  7. Documented scientific knowledge/evidence on the technology and its application in different areas;

  8. Dissemination of knowledge about application of innovative material.
